I was advised by my vet to start my elderly horse on this supplement following him suffering a bout of colic and then a similar episode a few months later.
I have used this supplement daily in his feed ever since - he is very happy to eat it and I’m pleased to say no further episodes. I want to do everything I can to keep him healthy and apparently this particular product reaches his gut still alive and keeps things in balance. I know it can be used when horses are stressed - following travelling or hard exercise and even when worming to prevent stomach upsets. It is one product I really wouldn’t want to be without .

I had a comprehensive microbiome test carried out on my beautiful Welsh Section D just to make sure that his gut was fit and healthy. The test was carried out by Sharon at Equibiome and the results reviewed with her in detail. Absolutely brilliant. He is now on a detailed program to balance his diet and bring his gut up to the correct levels for all the correct bacteria. This probiotic was one of those supplement designed to feed those good bacteria. It will take time to get the full results so far so good.

This is a good probiotic, I use it to support my horse before and after he is wormed, as chemical wormers aren't particularly kind to his digestive system. This doesn't contain brewers yeast or alfalfa meal, which I try to avoid. It works well for my horse.

This probiotic for horses contains Lactobacilli and Bifidobacterium as the active microbial content. Bifidobacteria are anaerobes but have a similar effect on milk being lactic acid bacteria to Lactobacilli This is the only one I have found for horse with this combination as the others all seem to contain yeasts. As an old microbiologist there is good evidenced in humans that lactobacilli reduce recovery times following eg acute gastroenteritis. There is no good evidence that they should be regularly taken. So horses bowels are very different then the impact of either yeasts or lactobacilli may be different. So I just choose this product because I am comfortable with the microbiology and would prefer not to use yeasts on humans or horses. Not awfully scientific I'm afraid. Of course with many "medicines" it is impossible to tell whether probiotics have helped your horses or not but I feel better giving it to particularly my older horses. Probably not much help to the horse fraternity but just my view so have given three stars for effectiveness as can't be sure how effective it is. Ken Ashley

Would this product be a good idea following a course of antibiotics?
It is never a bad idea to use a probiotic post antibiotic use in a horse. Whether this will definitely be necessary or not is hard to tell, but this probiotic will help normalise the gut microbiome which can be unsettled with certain antibiotics.
